CANTERBURY STARS IN BIG SCREEN BATTLE
In November and December 2004 Flock Hill station played host to the biggest filming experience in the Selwyn District’s history – the shooting of the battle scenes for the Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe.
“Our Land Speaks Volumes” is a collection of photographs and themes, depicting the story of Canterbury’s transformation into the land of Narnia, on display at the Selwyn Gallery during December and January.
Selwyn Mayor Michael McEvedy says “Our Land Speaks Volumes” is a wonderful opportunity to give something back to our community, many of whose residents performed as extras in the battle scenes, provided help on location or supplied accommodation to the enormous production crew involved”.
Just a half hour drive from the site where the battleground filming took place, the exhibition takes visitors through the cycle of production from the first location stills sent by Film South to Academy Award winning Director Andrew Adamson through to the promotional materials featuring battleground scenes prepared for the film’s much anticipated world-wide release.
Community Development Manager Ann Jarman says “many tourists are travelling throughout our district during this holiday season and this is a great chance for them to see how small town New Zealand can celebrate it’s scenic treasures on the big screen.”
Film South board member and Selwyn Gallery Committee Chairperson Ruth Warren comments on the “value this exhibition brings to the local community and the consideration and support for this initiative from the film makers, Selwyn District Council and Film South.”
The exhibition will be open Tuesday through Sunday 10am - 4 pm from December 10 until January 21.
