Canterbury offers cruise ship passengers a wealth of memories they’ll never forget.
From a quaint historic village - Akaroa, to a modern cosmopolitan city - Christchurch, there is a wealth of attractions within no more than an hour or so drive from the ship’s berths.
Over the 2002/03 cruise season, there was an estimated expenditure of over $15 million from the cruise ship industry into the local Canterbury economy from 36 port calls last summer. Lyttelton had 33 port calls from 14 cruise ships and Akaroa had 3 port calls from 2 ships.
Cruise ship passengers only get a tiny sample of what we have to offer as a region, but we believe about 40% of passengers return to New Zealand as independent travellers, so this represents an exciting opportunity for us with a high spending market.
