Christchurch City is recognised as New Zealand’s ‘Garden City’ with over 740 parks and an extensive system of rivers, streams and wetlands that contribute to creating a world renowned quality environment for residents and visitors.
One third of all public land is devoted to parks and reserves. This includes 13 major metropolitan parks covering some 3,000 hectares. The Jewel in the crown is Hagley Park, the green heart of the city. The park is bordered by the tranquil Avon River and is 161 hectares of majestic trees, greenery, lakes, playing fields and flowers.
Within Hagley Park lies the glorious Botanic Gardens, with its stunning displays of native and exotic trees, flowers and plants. Nearby Mona Vale is also famous for its beautiful grounds, river boundary and annual spring and summer displays of flowers.
Private gardens in Christchurch & Canterbury are also a source of pride with many residents individually or collectively devoting huge efforts to create their own botanic beauty. Many private gardens have become attractions in their own right and many tours are available for enthusiasts to visit some of the finest examples. Typically tours run between September and May each year with full and half-day options, commentaries and a changing selection of private and public gardens.
The Canterbury Horticultural Society and the Christchurch Beautifying Association both hold private garden competitions annually.
